COVID-19 hospitalizations in Roanoke/Lynchburg/Danville area hit record

Hospitals that serve the health department's Near Southwest region reported 499 hospitalized patients Friday.

That figure is nearly 25 percent higher than a week ago. It also tops the previous record of 450 set in January of 2021.

The Near Southwest region includes Roanoke, Lynchburg, Danville and Martinsville, as well as parts of the New River Valley.

The number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care has also been rising, though not as quickly. That number grew from 104 to 117 over the past week.

On a statewide level, the number of hospitalizations has been steady for a few days. The Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association's dashboard reported 3,845 hospitalized COVID-19 patients Friday.
