Bridgewater College confirms two safety officers killed during Tuesday incident

6:22PM UPDATE:

The school has confirmed that Campus Police Officer John Painter and Safety Officer J.J. Jefferson were killed by the shooter. State and local law enforcement responded to the incident and arrested the male suspect shortly before 2pm.

4:53PM UPDATE:

A Virginia State Police spokeswoman has confirmed a Bridgewater Campus Law Enforcement Officer and Campus Safety Officer were shot during the incident. The agency is not releasing any information about their condition at this time.

4:33PM UPDATE:

On its Twitter page, the school has sent out an all-clear notification. More information will be released as it becomes available.

Bridgewater College has released a joint statement with the Virginia State Police about the shooting incident Tuesday afternoon. Officials say they will continue to provide more information as it becomes available.

Suspect Apprehended in Active Shooting on Bridgewater College’s Campus

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — At approximately 1:20 p.m. Feb. 1, 2022, the Bridgewater College Police Department, Town of Bridgewater Police Department, Virginia State Police, Rockingham County Sheriff's Office, City of Harrisonburg Police, Augusta Sheriff’s Office, Town of Dayton Police Department, FBI, and the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries responded to a report of an active shooter on the Bridgewater College campus. The initial report came in that two officers had been shot and the armed suspect had fled the scene. State and local law enforcement immediately responded to the campus and initiated a massive search operation for the suspect. By 1:55 p.m., the male shooter was taken into police custody.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Previous Reporting:

Bridgewater College students and staff are being told to continue to shelter in place. They’ve been in that situation since the college warned of an active shooter on campus just before 1:30 Tuesday afternoon.

The governor’s office said a shooter was taken into custody.

A photo taken by a Harrisonburg Daily News-Record photographer shows a shirtless person face-down in a grassy field being swarmed by law enforcement officers.

Law enforcement and the college have not released any information about injuries or what led up to the incident.

On Twitter, Bridgewater College officials say officers are going through campus buildings and asked students and staff to be patient and cooperative.

The public is asked to stay away from the campus, which is located just south of Harrisonburg.
