Election 2020: Live Updates

NPR

Stay tuned to this updating blog post throuhgout the night for the latest as election results from across the Commonwealth continue to trickle in.

Monday Morning: 7th Congressional District Still Waiting; McEachin Wins in 4th

The 7th Congressional District race in Central Virginia is still too close to call.  At 10:00 am, Republican Nick Freitas has a 712 vote lead over incumbent Democrat Abigail Spanberger.  But there are some 35,000 early and absentee votes in Spotsylvania County that have not yet been reported.

In the 4th Congressional District, the Associated Press has called the race for incumbent Democrat Donald McEachin.

12:45AM: Webb Concedes in 5th Congressional District

Despite no call from the Associated Press, Democrat Cameron Webb has conceded to Republican Bob Good in Virginia's 5th Congressional District.

In a statement, Webb said the remaining, outstanding ballots would not be enough to overcome Good's lead, and so he officially conceded.

Good is a former official in the athletics department at Liberty University. He has previously said he backs the Trump administration's efforts to build a wall along the country's southern border and would take full advantage of the nation's oil and gas reserves.

Early vote counts continue to come in, with VPAP reports just under 500,000 votes are currently outstanding.

12:15AM Update: More Than a Million Early Votes Remain Outstanding

Most in-person voting in Virginia has been accounted for at this hour, but the Virginia Public Access Project reports just under 72% of the total vote count has been reported.

Republican Bob Good still leads Democrat Cameron Webb in the state's 5th Congressional District. According to VPAP, more than 90% of the total vote count there is in.

In the 7th, Republican Nick Freitas still leads Democratic incumbent Abigail Spanberger, but the margin has closed some. Another Democratic incumbent, Donald McEachin, is now leading Republican Leon Benjamin in the 4th District.

Repulican Congressman Morgan Griffith in southwest Virginia's 9th District was unopposed and will keep his seat.

Voters in Franklin, Halifax and Tazewell Counties have voted against relocating Confederate monuments outside their respective courthouses.

11:15PM Update: Early Voting Results Continue to Come In

Results from both in-person and early voting continue to trickle in at this hour.

Republican candidates still maintain leads over their Democratic challengers in the hotly-contested 2nd, 5th and 7th Congressional Districts.

Democratic incumbent Donald McEachin in Virginia's 4th District is also currently trailing Republican challenger Leon Benjamin.

Data from the Virginia Public Access Project shows there are still more than 1.5 million outstanding early votes.

Both Constitutional amendments still appear to be on their way to approval by Virginia voters. Bristol and Danville voters have given their approval to casino gambling. And in Halifax and Tazewell Counties, voters have voted against removing Confederate monuments from their respective courthouses.

10:30PM Update: Wexton Wins 10th District, Sherman Lea Wins Re-Election as Roanoke Mayor

Some early votes are beginning to trickle in, with most localities across Virginia reporting most of their in-person tallies.

The Associated Press has declared Democratic incumbent Jennifer Wexton the winner in Virginia's 10th Congressional District over Republican challenger Aliscia Andrews.

And, Sherman Lea has also won a second term as Roanoke's mayor over challenger David Bowers.

As of now, Republican candidates are still leading in some of Virginia's tightest and most-closely watched Congressional districts.

In the 5th District, Democrat Cameron Webb says he's not giving up just yet despite trailing currently to Republican Bob Good.

Republican Nick Freitas is leading Democratic incumbent Abigail Spanberger in the 7th. And another incumbent Democrat, Elaine Luria, trails Republican Scott Taylor in Virginia's 2nd Congressional District.

In-person voting shows significant support for both of the proposed Consitutional amendments on the ballot. And, in-person voters in Bristol, Danville, Portsmouth and Norfolk have shown suport for casinos.

U.S. Senator Mark Warner has declared victory over Republican Daniel Gade.

20 years ago, he was elected governor at a time when Virginia was a solidly red state.

Now, almost 20 years later, his former lieutenant governor Tim Kaine was standing by his side as Warner declared victory in northern Virginia.

"It goes back to 2001, when Tim and I started back in 2001 when we ran as governor and lieutenant governor. Virginians want responsible mainstream governance, and I think that's what Virginia Democrats have been able to show time and time again."

Republicans will have a shot at all three statewide races in 2021, when they will have candidates for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general.

9PM Update: Republican Bob Good Leading in 5th District, David Bowers Leads Sherman Lea in Roanoke Mayoral Race

Most localities across the state have not yet reported their early voting counts, but in-person results continue to come in at this hour.

Republican Bob Good currently maintains a lead over Democrat Cameron Webb in the hotly-contested 5th Congressional District race. However, it's just not clear how the early voting count will impact that once those results begin to be added to the overall count.

In the Roanoke mayoral race, David Bowers, who is seeking his third term as the city's mayor, currently leads incumbent Sherman Lea.

Last year, Roanoke City Council voted to move mayoral and council elections to November. They were previously held in May.

8:45PM Update: Cline, Wittman and Beyer Win Reelection to House of Representatives

The Associated Press has called three Virginia Congressional races. Republican Rob Wittman has defeated Democratic challenger Qasim Rashid in the 1st Congressional District. And in the 8th District, Don Beyer has won reelection over Republican challenger Jeff Jordan. And Republican Ben Cline has won re-election over Democrat Nicholas Betts in the 6th.

It's still early, but but Republican candidates are currently leading in some of Virginia's closest Congressional races. That includes the 2nd, 5th and 7th Congressional Districts.

There were two Constitutional amendments on the ballot for Virginians this year, and it currently appears that voters are in favor of both of them. The first would establish a bipartisan redistricting commission to draw Virginia's district lines.

The other would allow implment a state and local tax exemption for disabled veterans on their automobiles or pickup trucks.

The Associated Press has already called the presidential election in Virginia for former vice president Joe Biden. The Democratic candidate held double digit leads over President Donald Trump in statewide polling leading up to Election Day.

And, the AP has called the U.S. Senate race in favor of Mark Warner over Republican challenger Daniel Gade. Warner has won his third term in the Senate.

7:45PM Update: AP Calls Virginia for Joe Biden, U.S. Senate Race for Democrat Mark Warner

As polls have now closed across the Commonwealth, the Associated Press has called Virginia for former vice president Joe Biden.

And the AP has also indicated U.S. Senator Mark Warner has defeated Republican challenger Daniel Gade.

Anyone in line at their polling place at 7pm will still be allowed to cast their ballot.

In the last update from the Virginia Department of Elections at 4pm, officials did say there were some reports of some voters not wearing masks. But overall, there were not any widespread or major issues as of that update.

There were also no reports of voter intimidation.

As the night goes on, results reporting will be carried out the same way as it has been done in previous elections. That is, precincts in each locality will begin reporting their results after everyone in line has cast their ballot.
