University of Virginia has received a multi million dollar grant from the National Institutes of Health. Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond first received the same grant a year ago, paving the way for more medical research in Virginia.
Winners of the National Institutes of Health’s Clinical and Translational Science Awards are an elite group of research institutions. And now UVA and VCU are both part of the bunch.
The $21.5 million award goes to what Gerry Moeller, a physician and researcher at VCU, calls research that makes things real.
“The easiest way to explain it is research that translates basic science into having a positive impact on health for the community,” says Moeller.
The five-year medical grant has funded research at VCU for things like opioid treatment, and developing better medical record systems. At UVA the award will support the work of researchers statewide, including experts at Virginia Tech and Carilion Clinic.
