Northam Cites Scripture in Scolding Falwell

Virginia’s governor is urging the president of Liberty University to reverse his controversial decision inviting students back to campus.  Ralph Northam scolded Jerry Falwell, Jr. in Biblical terms.

This week, Liberty University plans to welcome students back from spring break, and as many as 5,000 will return to their dorms.  The news upset Governor Ralph Northam who has consistently urged Virginians to stay home rather than risk spreading the new coronavirus.  At an afternoon news conference, he scolded University President Jerry Falwell through scripture.

"As we are told in First Corinthians, it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. Proving faithful means providing clear and consistent guidance," he explained.

Northam said Liberty’s decision could prove risky to students, staff, residents of Lynchburg and Virginia.

“I would suggest that President Falwell look to the actions of the leaders of Virginia’s flagship universities for how to set a strong example in this health crisis and to please reconsider his message that invites and encourages students to return to campus,” he said.

In an interview with CNN, Falwell defended his decision, saying fewer than 2,000 students had come back, and about half are international students who have nowhere else to go. He compared the campus to an apartment complex, with most courses offered only online and noted seating in the library and computer lab now keeps at least six feet between patrons.
