Virginia Sees Largest Single-Day Increase in COVID-19 Cases

The number of COVID-19 cases jumped to 9,630, according to data released Tuesday by the Virginia Department of Health.  The increase of 640 cases is the largest reported single-day increase since the crisis began.

Cases had been trending downward slightly over the preceding three days.

The health department reported 324 deaths from the illness, up from 300 Monday.  That number does not appear to include the deaths of ten residents of a Harrisonburg long-term care facility.  The local health department and Accordius Health reported that number in a news release late Monday.  There is often a lag in such data being incorporated into the statewide dashboard updated by VDH headquarters each morning.

More than 58,000 tests have been conducted in Virginia and 1,581 people have been hospitalized.

With Tuesday's update, the health department began reporting expanded data about cases in Virginia.  The updated dashboard includes both lab-confirmed cases and clinically diagnosed cases, as well as locality-level detail about cases, deaths and hospitalizations.
