About the Artist:
Known by fans across the country for his numerous national television appearances, his yearly national arena tour appearances and for headlining the nation’s hottest comedy clubs, Don “DC” Curry is probably most widely recognized for his comedic acting role as the zany “Uncle Elroy” on the urban classics, “Next Friday” and “Friday After Next.” He’s currently wrapping up production on season one of his own mock-reality show, “Nappi Valley,” about the zany mis-adventures of DC hiring some of his not-as-busy comedian friends to turn in their microphones for rakes and shovels and do chores around his farm. He’s also currently the host of his hilarious podcast, “DC Curry’s Dis-race.”
He recently appeared on back to back episodes of the hit sitcom, The Ms. Pat Show and guest starred in executive producer Cedric The Entertainer’s Finding Happy. He had a recurring role on the Aaron McGruder sitcom, Black Jesus and has made guest appearances on: The Boondocks, Everybody Hates Chris, The Steve Harvey Show, The Chris Rock Show, The Tracy Morgan Show, HBO Def Comedy Jam, Martin Lawrence’s 1st Amendment Stand Up, Comics Unleashed, Comics Unleashed Hot Chocolate and TV One’s Way Black When.
He was also the host of BET Comic View, and star of his own Comedy Central Special and his own BET Comedy Special. His big TV break came when he was cast as a series regular on ABC’s Grace Under Fire.

Mallory Zondag, award-winning artist and educator living in New York, uses fiber arts and sculpture to explore the natural world and how it relates to the physical body and the human experience.

She explores deeply personal and connective universal stories through the meditative and hands-on practices of wet felting, weaving, sculpting, and stitching, seeking to bring the ephemeral into physical being. 

This exhibition of work includes a site-specific installation at the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum, which was created using hand felted wool, wax, fibers, fabrics and objects both found and recycled. 

Mallory Zondag: Transmissions from the Anthropocene, on view at the museum from July 30 - December 5, will be accompanied by an artist lecture and a series of community workshops in the Roanoke Valley.

Persian/Iranian-American artist Maryam Safajoo works in oil on linen, creating intimate and vulnerable narrative paintings. Safajoo documents the stories of the Iranian Bahá’í community’s systematic persecution after the 1979 revolution—stories that are often erased, silenced, or preserved only in the memories of those who endured them.

Many of the incidents she depicts only exist in the memory of those who experienced them and have no pictorial evidence. Through conversations, interviews, and archival research, she reconstructs these histories with meticulous detail, incorporating the clothing, artifacts, and environments that were present at these events. 

Through her work, Safajoo reflects on a world free from prejudice—one where people are not judged by their beliefs, gender, identity, race, or social status.

Maryam Safajoo: The Dream of Freedom will be on view at the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum from August 6 - December 12, 2026.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month early with two days of community, culture, and local shopping at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture!

Kick off the festivities on Friday, September 4, from 5:00–8:00 PM during the VMHC's First Friday celebration. Enjoy an evening of family-friendly activities, including a bounce house, face painting, hands-on crafts, and free after-hours museum admission. Dance to the rhythms of Bio Ritmo, connect with local community organizations, and shop a curated market featuring talented Latino artists and makers.

The celebration continues on Saturday, September 5, from 10:00 AM–3:00 PM, with another day to browse the Artes RVA Market and support local Latino-owned businesses and artists. Admission to the market and the museum's first floor is free during market hours. Access to the museum's exhibitions beyond the first floor requires the purchase of a museum admission ticket.

Throughout August, there's plenty to see at Art Works. Explore six galleries, visit 82 working artist studios, and enjoy a full lineup of exhibits, including Sacred Queerness: Nature, Spirituality, and the Queer Experience and juried group show Queer by Nature. Other solo exhibitions include T. Parker, Justin White, Heather McCoy, and Mandy Powell, the Community Bridge Project featuring Zahra Chowdhury, and our monthly All Media Show showcasing artists from across Virginia.

Visit us Tuesdays through Sundays 11am- 5pm. Admission is free and open to the public. Convenient and free parking is available. Exhibits will remain on view through September 19th, 2026 (unless otherwise noted). The Bridge Project Exhibit will continue through August 31st.
