The Wildlife Center of Virginia offers an online video game to help kids learn the sounds of local animals.

The three-minute game features a large cast of characters, from falcons, eagles and owls to possums, bears and red fox. Their photos appear on the screen and players must guess which one goes with what sound. Chief veterinarian Karra Pierce explains as she stands near enclosures filled with some very noisy raptors.

“You listen to all the sounds as a family and try to figure out who’s who, and then we give you all the answers at the end. It’s very much like this actually."

The center hopes this game will raise public awareness of wildlife in our midst. As the human population keeps expanding into wild creatures’ habitat, it’s on us to live with them in harmony, and that means – among other things – learning to identify their sounds.
