Officials at the University of Virginia have released more information about the incident that triggered a school-wide alert Monday morning.
They say university police responded to reports of shots fired near UVA’s Rotunda shortly after 4:30am. They found a male who appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
His identity is still unknown at this time.
Police are investigating the incident and will release more information as it becomes available.

Shortly after 4:30 on Monday morning, University Police responded to reports of shots fired on the southern side of the Rotunda. They found a deceased male who appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. After securing the weapon, they initiated an investigation, which is currently ongoing. We ask that members of the public continue to avoid the area until the investigation has concluded and the scene is clear. The subject’s identity is unknown at this time. University Police will provide additional updates as more information is gathered.
